EXTENDED UNTIL END FEBRUARY: Mann Underground by Shane Lucas

This exhibition has proven very popular and will be extended to include the half-term period. Shane Lucas is in daily to talk to visitors.

MANN UNDERGROUND, an exhibition by Shane Lucas of models, books and sketches based on the Laxey Mines, opens on the 15th January at the Sayle Gallery.

Shane was formerly a caving explorer and instructor, and a passionate follower of adventurous sports. Whilst converting a Tholtan, which had once beed a miner’s cottage, in Baldhoon, above Laxey, he felt the urge venture underground and due to the lack of Manx caves, began to explore the numerous old mines both the Great Laxey and other on the island. At the time these were all open.

The highlight of the exhibition are the ceramic models detailing the miners at work in the 1880’s. Accompanying them are Shane’s numerous sketches and technical drawings, which provide a detailed account of the mines, how they functioned and the routine of the miners in their underground environment.

Shane Lucas is an artist and sculptor, which he has combined with the love of the netherworld. His vision can be enjoyed from 15th Jan to 28th Feb 2016 at the Sayle Gallery.
